Real Time Abstraction Management

In England and Wales, approximately two-thirds of drinking water comes from surface waters.

Summary

It is widely considered that these resources will come under increasing strain due to the combined effects of population growth (increased abstraction) and climate change. This project, conducted in collaboration with Severn Trent Water, aims to implement a modelling lead approach to surface water abstraction operation. Using optimisation techniques coupled with hydrological forecasting and water resource management models, this approach allows operators to make the most of short term opportunities to abstract water at times when water resources and pumping capacity is available.

It is anticipated that the methodology will reduce environmental impacts of water abstraction, increase the resilience of water supply systems and lower pumping and energy costs. The project will review the performance of the new system at a number of trail sites such that the performance of the approach can be robustly quantified.
