Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest fields of engineering you can study, exploring engineering science and how it can be applied to a wide range of different environments and industries. 

As a mechanical engineer, you can make an impact in industries including manufacturing, product design, transport and aerospace, healthcare, energy and sustainability, sports engineering, safety, the built environment, and more.

At Sheffield, you’ll have the chance to study from this wide range of subject and impact areas as part of your course, taking advantage of the diverse expertise and specialist teaching on offer here in Sheffield.

Before you arrive

We want to make your transition to university life in Sheffield as easy as possible so on this page, we're giving you some resources to help you prepare before you arrive here.

Make sure you’re registered

Registration is the number one task before starting your studies. You should have already received information separately about the registration process and related activities that are run centrally by the University. If you haven’t please go to the registration homepage to find out more. You must complete online registration prior to arriving in Sheffield. 


Induction day

Our Mechanical Engineering Induction Day is on Thursday 26th September, from 9.00am in Rooms EO5 and EO6 in the Pam Liversage Building.

There will be presentations from academics and you will hear more about your degree structure and learn what is expected from you during your time at Sheffield. Information about Optional Modules will also be provided, along with the opportunity to talk with Module Leaders. Lunch will be provided

This is an important day as it will mark the start of your journey with us in Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield, so we recommend that you do attend this if possible.

Our students have access to the latest equipment and technologies, including a dedicated natural robotics, computer, control and power systems laboratory, as well as teaching laboratories in our state-of-the-art engineering building, The Diamond.

iForge

The iForge is housed in the University's flagship Diamond building, our innovative facility, and is giving students the opportunity to collaborate, create and 'make' outside of their academic studies.

Module selection guidance for MSc Students

You must select your optional modules and have these approved by a member of our School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering before you can complete your registration.

You will be selecting your modules online via our Online Module Selection (which you may hear referred to as OMS) system. This system will become available to you as part of your pre-registration activities. 

To guide you in choosing your modules, please refer to this webpage where you will find your programme details and the optional modules that are available to you on your programme.

If you do need further information don't worry, you will be able to discuss modules with course leaders during your Induction Day sessions.
