The University of Sheffield played host to the 21st International Computing & Control in the Water Industry Conference (CCWI), welcoming 130 delegates from both academia and industry from across the globe to discuss the future of the water sector in September.

Held in the University’s most recent sustainable building, The Wave, the conference, which ran from 1st to 3rd September, showcased 140+ presentations that primarily tackled engineering challenges in the urban water sector while also devoting significant attention to related social and global issues.

The conference aimed to exchange knowledge, foster innovation, and discuss future challenges related to the safe management of vital water systems. It also provided a platform to share achievements in the computing and control of urban water systems and encourage collaboration between researchers and practitioners.

The three-day event concluded with the awarding of two prizes: Best Paper was won by Dr Matthew Johns et al. for their paper on a Virtual Reality Immersive Learning Environment and the Best Student Paper was won by Kevin Logan for their paper on the Experimental Validation of the Design and Operation for Resilience of Water Systems.

Professor of Water Infrastructure Engineering, Joby Boxall, said: “The conference was a great success. While a huge effort (massive thank you to all those involved), such events make a pivotal difference to ensure that our research is known and appreciated internationally, as well as our amazing university and city. It will help to ensure that the excellence of our Urban Water Research is known and appreciated internationally, enhancing the evidence base for our well founded international reputation.”

Sponsors for the event were United Utilities who supported the Best Paper and Best Student Paper prizes. In addition to this, Curra Terrae sponsored the conference meal and the additional conference sponsor was tsi flowmeters.
