About the Event
This session brings together Professor Nilufer Oral and Patricia Galvão Teles, Co-Chairs of the International Law Commission’s Study Group on Sea-Level Rise, for a timely discussion of sea-level rise and its implications for international law. Drawing on the Study Group’s work, the speakers will explore the legal consequences of sea-level rise for baselines and the outer limits of maritime zones, maritime delimitation, and the exercise of coastal State sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction, as well as the rights of third States. The discussion will also address issues relating to the protection of persons affected by sea-level rise, and broader questions relating to Statehood, including criteria for the creation and continuity of States, examples of responses adopted by States and other actors, and possible future approaches in light of sea-level rise.
