Jessop Building
Our beautiful home in a former Victorian hospital is ideally equipped for world-leading research and teaching in music.
Ensemble rooms
Much of our teaching takes place in our two light and airy ensemble rooms, which are also ideal for rehearsing medium-sized ensembles.
Ethnomusicology room
The Ethnomusicology Room acts as both a small-group rehearsal and teaching space and a storage space for the Department’s large collection of instruments from non-Western traditions, which include drums and mbiras from sub-Saharan Africa, a large collection of Korean percussion, and a range of instruments in the North Indian Classical tradition, such as tabla, harmoniums, santoor and tanpura.
Instrumental teaching rooms
In addition to the Soundhouse rooms, there are two practice rooms are based within the Jessop building which are the main space for instrumental lessons during the day. Students can also book out these rooms using the online booking system. Both rooms are equipped with upright pianos and music stands.
Music technology lab
The hub of our music technology teaching, the tech lab features 20 workstations equipped with Apple Mac computers running music industry standard Logic recording studio software and Sibelius notation software, and is a popular space for our composition students. This room is used as both a student workspace and teaching room.
It's handy to have some dedicated computers for music students in the department. The Sibelius workstations and midi keyboards are perfect for composition.

Period instruments room
The department’s collection of around 50 Western period instruments is housed in the Historical Instruments Room, which is also used for postgraduate performance teaching. The collection includes historical keyboards, strings, winds and brass, from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, all of which are available for students to use.
Postgraduate room
Our dedicated workspace for postgraduate research students has hotdesk computer workstations and storage for books and equipment.
It's a nice quiet area to work in, and it has been a very useful place to bounce ideas back and forth and to meet others in the programme.
