Working as a student

Become a student ambassador

If you’re passionate about sharing your university experience and supporting prospective and current students, the Student Ambassador role is a fantastic opportunity to represent the University  while developing valuable skills in communication, leadership, and teamwork.

We actively encourage students from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to join our ambassador team. Your voice and experiences are essential in helping us create an inclusive, supportive environment for all students - both current and future.

By becoming an ambassador, you’ll not only represent your community but also inspire others considering studying at Sheffield.

Registered students: Become a student ambassador

Become an Access Mentor

Access Mentors provide direct support to prospective students who have the academic potential to go to university, but are from groups underrepresented in higher education (HE).

We particularly encourage applications from students with widening access characteristics, such as those from BAME communities or other groups currently underrepresented in HE.

Postgraduate Research (PGR) students

Guidance and support for postgraduate research students, supervisors, and departments on all aspects of undertaking and managing postgraduate research study is available on the Postgraduate Research Hub.

Centre for Equity & Inclusion

The Centre for Equity & Inclusion (CEI) is a research hub based at the University of Sheffield. It seeks to enhance the university experience for postgraduate researchers (PGRs) of colour, whilst challenging racism and other systems of power within and beyond higher education.

CEI have also created the Anti-Racist Archive, a space where people of colour can reflect on, discuss, and share their experience in a collective space. It offers a curated collection of articles, videos, podcasts, and other materials aimed at fostering understanding and action against racism.

For more information, contact Alex Mason in the Centre for Equity & Inclusion at alex.mason@sheffield.ac.uk, or complete the contact form.

Funded projects to support BAME PGRs

The University has also been awarded funding for three projects which aim to tackle persistent inequalities that create barriers for Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) students to access and take part in postgraduate research.

The Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE)

YCEDE is a collaboration between five universities in Yorkshire, 12 UKRI funded Doctoral Training partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training plus a number of external partners dedicated to equity at doctoral level. Reporting concerns and incidents

We’re proud to be an inclusive, tolerant and diverse community, where the diversity of people, opinions, and beliefs can and does thrive. We appreciate that sometimes students will suffer prejudice, discrimination, harassment and violence on account of their race.

We’re actively tackling all areas of discrimination and harassment, and are committed to ensuring that all our students and staff are confident that they study, work and live in a safe and inclusive environment.

If you experience any form of discrimination, you can seek support or report through our dedicated Report and Support platform.

For more information about what to do if you experience discrimination and harassment, including hate incidents, sexual violence or abuse:
