She has implemented a variety of initiatives aimed at improving the School’s environmental and sustainability practices as well as enhancing staff wellbeing, ranging from academic textbook recycling schemes to the creation of a wellbeing garden to local community initiatives, with many activities continuing over a period of several years.
Julie reflects on the sense of community at the School and the role of the student voice in making the School a welcoming place for all:
“I think it’s so important that we consider sustainability in all that we do; I really believe that small actions can go on to have a big impact. We know that with some of the initiatives implemented in the School of Law, colleagues have taken those ideas home and made it work for them on a smaller scale and that is so wonderful to see. I think this also adds to the sense of community within the School, we’re all working towards the same goal and doing it in a way that works for each of us.
“Ensuring that all feel welcomed at the School is incredibly important, this was one of the driving goals when redesigning our Postgraduate Research (PGR) space. We wanted this to be a space that was inclusive and welcoming for all, and we worked closely with our PGRs to understand what they needed from this space, their voices in this project were essential.
“We’ve also created a quiet room in the School, inspired by the quiet room at the Students’ Union, and it's a space for our students if they need to take a moment. We considered equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the design process to add to the student experience for our neurodiverse students.
“The School of Law is a place where you’re encouraged to develop and grow, and your voice is always heard. I’ve had the opportunity to suggest and implement new projects and initiatives, and it's heartening to see these come to fruition and hopefully positively impact our student community.”
