What made you want to study your course, and why did you decide to study at Sheffield?

I always had a passion for writing but didn't know exactly how or what to do with it as a career, so through doing lots of research I came across various Journalism courses that aligned perfectly with the things I care about. For example, writing, community, and representation.

I decided to study in Sheffield for many different reasons, mainly because the Journalism course offered the NCTJ qualification alongside it, but aside from the course, I particularly love the green spaces and parks you can go to that are always a short walk away from campus!

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

A standout moment so far has been the news project module in my third year, this truly gave me the opportunity to grow as a journalist as I learnt how to write news to multiple deadlines, keep web pages updated and worked alongside an amazing group of people.

What skills and knowledge have you developed during your course?

The first thing that comes to mind is my confidence, I'm quite introverted usually but doing the journalism course has helped me grow massively with my ability to speak in public settings and meeting new people. I have also gained so many valuable skills that I can take with me when I pursue a career in news, such as shorthand, interviewing, news writing, editing video and audio and so much more!

What are your future career aspirations?

This course has re-affirmed my dreams of becoming a journalist. My passion lies with community news and current affairs but I am definitely open to exploring any opportunities that come my way, as this course has provided me with a wide ranging skillset, so I know I am well equipped to go into multiple areas of journalism.

What are you enjoying most about the Sheffield?

Sheffield is great because it has the city feel about it, but also has so many parks and green spaces that are perfect for walks when studying gets a bit too much! It's also pretty cheap compared to a lot of other cities which is needed as a student! The people are friendly and there's a real sense of community which is something I always appreciate.
