Welcome to the School of Information, Journalism and Communication
A very warm welcome to the School of Information, Journalism and Communication! As Head of School, I am so pleased that you have chosen to join us here in Sheffield for the next stage of your education. This is an exciting time for you, and we will help you to settle into student life here on campus, and in the city of Sheffield. I came to Sheffield for the first time as a Masters student many years ago, and I had such a positive experience that even though I went away for a few years to work elsewhere, I always wanted to come back - and I hope that you will feel the same when you finish your degree with us.
You have chosen an exciting time to join the IJC: in September 2025 the Information School and the School of Journalism, Media and Communication joined together to create the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, a merger of two of the highest ranked departments in their field. We are recognised nationally and internationally for our excellence in teaching, our world-class research, and for the achievements of our graduates who go on to a wide range of exciting roles across the information and data, journalism and communication professions, and we will do what we can to support you to achieve the same degree of success.
Our undergraduate programmes will give you the big picture of your chosen disciplinary area. We will provide you with the foundation and tools you need, with a flexible delivery to bring your skills to the right level by the end of your first year. You will learn to both ask and answer the tough questions, working with us and your peers as part of a cohort that will become so important to you as you progress through each year. Your teaching will take the form of industry-led and research-informed content, with regular opportunities to engage with both academic colleagues in the school and leading industry experts, as you develop your learning and skills.
Our aim is that you enjoy and benefit from your time at the University of Sheffield, and we are here to support you. My role as the Head of School is to provide leadership and strategic direction in the School, working with the leadership team to make decisions, with our students always the priority. I hope you enjoy your degree programme, and I look forward to meeting you in September, during Welcome Week.
