Advanced Reading List
It is not compulsory to read anything before you arrive on the course. If you would like to begin preparing, however, these are the books you are recommended to begin with.
- BA Journalism Studies
We would very much like you to get a head start on your shorthand skills before you get here. We have seen that students who get a head start on their shorthand before they arrive have a much higher chance of success.
We would like you to work through the first six chapters of Teeline Gold Standard for Journalists before you arrive. You don't have to be perfect, but we want you to attempt all the exercises. We'll refresh you on them when you get here and can give you pointers on areas of confusion.
Other reading:
- Tony Harcup Principles and Practice: https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/journalism/book268232
- Teeline Gold: https://www.nctj.com/product/teeline-gold-course-book/
- News: Please immerse yourself in news coverage for the weeks before your arrival. In particular, please note how different organisations cover the same story, and how it is treated in both broadcast, online, and on social media. No news consumption snobbery please! Please read as wide a section as you can
- BSc Data Science
Before starting your programme, it would be helpful to do some general reading on data science practices and stay up to date with the latest developments in the field. Building a working knowledge of programming and brushing up on basic statistics will also give you a head start. You may find it helpful to read the following article before your course begins:
- Shah, C., Anderson, T., Hagen, L., & Zhang, Y. (2021). An iSchool approach to data science: Human‐centered, socially responsible, and context‐driven. Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, 72(6), 793-796.
