Governance, Ethics and Power

Drawing on cross-disciplinary expertise in Information Studies, Journalism and Communication, this research cluster studies the creation, dissemination and use of different kinds of information, and the rules shaping who benefits and who holds power.

About our work

Our objectives as a cluster are:

  1. To be a cross-disciplinary home for studying the creation, dissemination and use of different kinds of information and the rules shaping who benefits and who holds power.
  2. To investigate key governance, ethics and power challenges relevant to the study and practice of information, journalism and communication and how these may be addressed
  3. To explore different stakeholder perspectives on issues of information, media governance, ethics, and power
  4. To develop an international and global perspective on these issues

Indicative topics include but are not restricted to:

  • Governance and ethics challenges relevant to the creation, dissemination and use of information
  • Data, information and AI governance
  • Issues of media freedom and journalists’ safety
  • Taking a solutions-driven approach to governance, ethics and power challenges
  • International and global perspectives on information and media governance, ethics, and power

Our activities

  • Investigating contemporary challenges in governance, ethics and power
  • Exploring cross-disciplinary perspectives on key concepts in governance, ethics and power
  • Guest speakers from academia, industry, civil society and policy to hear up-to-date information from a range of perspectives on cluster themes
  • Activities tailored towards PhD students including informal feedback on papers, presentations, how to work with partners outside of academia and how research can have a real-world impact
  • Developing potential research collaboration projects
