How to apply
All applications for taught postgraduate degrees use our online process – but you might need to include extra material, depending on your circumstances and which degree you want to study.
Applying online
Apply now using our Postgraduate Online Application Form
There are no specific deadlines for receipt of applications, but we recommend you apply early as courses fill up quickly.
When you apply online, you may upload the supplementary information such as course transcripts, language certificates (if your first language is not English), references, writing samples or voice recording, as appropriate.
You do not need to wait for final examination results or references before you apply. The University of Sheffield can issue conditional offer letters if you have not taken your final examinations or English language qualifications.
Additional requirements
Some of our courses require applicants to attend an interview. The interview sessions are also excellent opportunities for candidates to get the chance to meet other members of teaching staff, hear more about the programmes, and see the school facilities. Details of the interview will be sent through to you in advance, including whether this will take place in person or online.
The following courses have additional requirements for applications, as detailed below.
MA Journalism
Interview someone you know and write a news story based on that discussion. The story should be between 300-400 words and should have a news angle that a reader would find interesting and engaging.
You should use the style and structure you would find in the local newspaper or website from where you live. Please include this story with your application.
Please note, if your task is not submitted within four weeks of the application submission, we may reject your application.
MA Broadcast Journalism
Please download the news bulletin script below. Read the script, record a bulletin, and include this recording with your application as an mp3 or wav file.

Please note, if your task is not submitted within four weeks of the application submission, we may reject your application.
All other Information PGT courses
Including MSc Data Science, MSc Information Management, MSc Information Systems, MSc Information Systems Management and MA Librarianship
In addition to the completed application form, please supply the following:
- A supporting statement.
This should be about 300 words describing why you would like to take the course, the skills and experiences you will bring to it, why you wish to study at Sheffield and how you expect it to help your future career. - Two references.
These should be supplied and signed by academic staff at institutions where you have studied previously. They must be presented on the official letter-headed paper of the relevant institution.
If you have been out of education for the last two years, you can send one academic reference plus one from your current employer if you wish.
Please note that for applications to the MA Librarianship course, it is preferable to supply one academic reference and one reference relating to work experience in the librarianship field. - Proof of your undergraduate degree qualification.
This should be an academic transcript or certificate. If you have yet to graduate, please send your most recent transcript, showing your results to date. If this is not written in English then an official translation is required. - English language certificates (EU and International applicants).
