The European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) is a leading society of communication scholars devoted to development of communication research and higher education in Europe. It is organised into 15 thematic sections, of which Radio and Sound is one.
The event will be held on the 8th and 9th of September 2025 in The Wave, and will consist of a selection of panel discussions two keynote sessions. The first, delivered by Professor Mia Lindgren from the University of Tasmania, is entitled ‘Sound research that resonates: breaking academic boundaries through podcasting’. The second is delivered by Professor Tanja Bosch from the University of Cape Town and is entitled ‘From Airwaves to Algorithmic Soundscapes: Sonic Citizenship in an Age of Populism and War’.
The 2025 conference is being organised by Emma Heywood, Marie Fierens and Raúl Terol.
Dr Heywood said: “We're really looking forward to welcoming colleagues from around the world to The University of Sheffield for the 8th ECREA Radio and Sound Conference. Our theme this year is ‘Cog in a Wheel? Radio and Sound in the Changing Mediascape’. It is all about how radio continues to adapt and thrive alongside podcasts, streaming, and new sound technologies.
“What makes this event special is the chance to bring researchers, practitioners and industry voices together in one place to share ideas and experiences. The fact that there is such strong international interest shows just how important radio and audio remain, and I think this conference will be a great opportunity to celebrate that and look ahead to the future of sound.”
