The Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures is excited to announce the launch of a major new funding opportunity to kick start research projects that can deliver significant real world impact and provide practical solutions to complex sustainability problems.

In total the GCSF will be committing half a million pounds to drive sustainability research and initiatives that will provide tangible benefits both within South Yorkshire and beyond.

Grantham Amplification Fund

The Grantham Amplification Fund (GA Fund) will provide essential seed funding to develop research, knowledge exchange initiatives and potential start-up projects.

The ambition is for the fund to offer the support required to unlock innovative ideas that have the potential to tackle the pressing challenges of our times. This vital financial backing will help projects overcome initial barriers and bring research to life.

The fund is open to all academics, research staff, PGRs, and professional service members at the University of Sheffield whose projects have a strong, cross-disciplinary sustainability focus.

Successful applicants will be awarded funding between £1,000 and £75,000 to accelerate their projects, with the aim of generating real-world impact or attracting larger external funding.

The Regional Readiness Fund

There is also a sub-fund being delivered in partnership with the South Yorkshire Sustainability Centre (SYSC) which aims to deliver impactful projects within the South Yorkshire region.

This “Regional Readiness Fund” is an exciting initiative designed to encourage researchers to work with project partners within the region to drive innovative projects that respond to sustainability challenges.

Co-Director of GCSF, Professor Tony Ryan, said: “Sustainability research is at the heart of the University’s mission and purpose. We are pleased to announce the Grantham Amplification Fund that will provide half a million pounds to give innovative, cross-disciplinary research projects the vital support they need to drive real world solutions that will have a genuine impact on our burgeoning climate crisis.”

Professor Rachael Rothman from GCSF and SYSC said: “We are thrilled to launch the Regional Readiness Fund as part of the Grantham Amplification Fund. We believe that by providing dedicated funding we can unlock some real potential to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. This is an invitation for researchers to bring exciting ideas forward and the chance to make a real difference.”
