Aix-Marseille to Sheffield: A Year of Growth, Green Spaces and New Adventures
Why did you decide to study abroad, and what made you choose Sheffield?
Studying abroad always seemed to be the best way to not only learn or perfect a language but also discover a whole new culture, places and people and how you fit in all of it. I chose Sheffield because I had learned that the University was one of the best in the country (and that the Student’s Union was voted best in the UK multiple times!), that the city had lots of green spaces, independent shops, and was next to the Peak District. All of that combined made me think Sheffield was a perfect choice for me (and it was).
What do you like best about living and studying in Sheffield?
I really enjoyed all the activities you could take part in, whether from the SU or anywhere in town, how welcoming and friendly everybody is, all the little gems in the city (coffeeshops, thrift stores…) and green spaces! The campus is very beautiful as well, and you’re constantly discovering new places you immediately love.
What was your initial impression of Sheffield and the University when you first arrived?
I thought that everyone was very welcoming, and I immediately noticed how green Sheffield is and how despite being one of the biggest cities in England, it doesn’t feel stifling or intimidating at all.
What were the highlights of your course?
Definitely meeting so many like-minded people, who made class all the better! Orientation and Welcome week were also such a nice way to discover how the uni worked and meet new people. I would recommend to any exchange students to go to lots of activities during those weeks (and all year-round, of course), to make friends and discover what you like to do.
How will you use your experience of studying abroad at Sheffield in the future?
I would be a lot more open to opportunities such as going abroad, whether to study or work, since my year in Sheffield made me realise I would like to live here permanently one day. I would also be a lot more confident in myself and my capabilities.
What would you say to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield?
Go for it! Sheffield in itself is an amazing city to live in, but the uni is also a big part of why my experience was so positive. The professors are always here for you, the campus is lovely, student accommodation is amazing, and the SU will remind you life isn’t just about going to class… Cannot recommend enough. It can seem scary to go abroad, but it will most likely turn into the best experience of your life!
Also, enjoy it as much as you can! Sounds very obvious, but it’s easy to get caught up in uni work and homesickness and stress in general… Don’t forget there’s lots of support for you if you’re having a tough time.
Make a list of every place you want to visit or activities you’d like to do, cause time flies by very very fast. It’s a privilege to study abroad, so treat it as such!
