Big Walk at Home

If you can’t join us in the Peaks on Friday 3 July because you have a packed schedule, live too far away or need a more accessible pace, you can still raise money to save young lungs through the Big Walk at Home.

Big Walk at Home

This is your opportunity to count the miles in a way that suits you. Be that in a local park, on a treadmill or even in your own garden. No matter how you participate in the Big Walk, every mile covered will help to save young lungs.

And we know that our wonderful alumni community spreads across the globe, so if you are living too far away to take part in the Big Walk why not take on the Big Walk at Home? You could even reach out to other alumni in your area to work as a team.

How to get involved

Everyone has different strengths, so you can pick a challenge that suits you. Whether you'd like to hike a certain trail, cycle a set distance or take on a seated challenge. You can tailor your challenge to fit your lifestyle.

Here’s some inspiration to get you started;

  • A mile a day for a month - commit to covering at least a mile every day for a month.
  • Team up with friends to cover 30 miles in total - divide the distance between you.
  • Set your own target - set your own distance or target e.g climb a mountain, cycle the length of the Tour de France or cover a distance of 35 miles in 3 months.

How to take part

Once you’ve picked your challenge, you’ll need to set up your Just Giving page in order to fundraise. Don't forget to reach out to us at giving@sheffield.ac.uk or on 0114 222 5598 to let us know that you're taking part.

For help setting up your page, please read our instructions.

Make a £5 donation to your page and we’ll send you a T-shirt to complete the challenge in and a medal to celebrate your achievement.

Reach out to us at giving@sheffield.ac.uk or on 0114 222 5598 to let us know where to send your t-shirt and medal.

Lucy's Big Walk 2025

Lucy, a participant in the big walk at home wearing her Big Walk medal and t-shirt

Last year, the Big Walk raised funds for neurological disease research at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN). For Lucy, living with a complex neuro-muscular condition, this cause was close to her heart.

Lucy was determined to stay involved and have an impact despite health issues. The one day 30 mile trek wasn’t an option, so she adapted, committing to 30 miles over 30 days instead.

By posting daily updates to her JustGiving fundraising page, Lucy took her supporters on a journey, showing them the beautiful natural landscapes she saw while taking on her challenge.

Lucy raised an incredible £1,477. Highlighting that the Big Walk is not just an event but a personal challenge that anyone can set and conquer in their own way. Whether you do it in 24 hours or 30 days, every mile you cover will have a huge impact.

And Lucy didn’t stop after her challenge was completed. On the day of the Big Walk Lucy volunteered as a marshal to cheer on the walkers.
