Carnival as Queer Claim: Reappropriating Rio de Janeiro’s streets through LGBTQ+ celebratory performances

My PhD research looks at the role of LGBTQ+ street carnival in shaping Rio’s queer urban geography. It also hopes to contribute to understanding everyday queerness through iconic performances and year-round practices of organising and preparation. This research project aims to attain an extensive understanding of Rio’s LGBTQ+ community’s sense of place during, and after, carnival; the everyday struggles faced by them; and the overall context in which LGBTQIA+ activists and artists resist and exist in the city. I use qualitative and visual methods, such as walking interviews, field diary and filmmaking. My research is funded by WRoCAH (White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities).
