Profile

Margi has an MA in Archaeology & Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Social & Cultural Geographies from the University of Sheffield. She has worked with the Department of Geography’s International Development Masters programme since 2014, after a career in the NGO and consultancy sectors focusing on international environment-development issues.

Research interests
  • Community-based and participatory governance of wildlife, landscape and natural resources, in both global North and global South.
  • Discourses and practices of environmental volunteering.
  • Environmental values, “social nature” and cultural ecosystem services.
  • Political ecology and environment-development issues.

Current Research:

Margi is currently working on prospective publications from two recent projects:

  • Local people’s engagement with the River Derwent in the Peak District – a cultural ecosystem services approach (with Dr. Helen Moggridge, Department of Geography).
  • Discourses and practices of community activism in the regeneration of the River Don corridor in Sheffield (with Dr. Steve Connelly and Dr. Liz Sharp, Department of Urban & Spatial Planning).

She is also currently completing her PhD on the intersection of community-based forest conservation and international volunteering, based on ethnographic fieldwork in Kenya.

Teaching interests

Margi specialises in practice-related aspects of the International Development Masters programmes. She convenes the Professional Skills module for the courses and manages all the research placements for these programmes. She also teaches on the international development field class, including preparatory work with students and research training in the field, and advises students on other aspects of fieldwork including risk management.

Professional activities and memberships

Margi has been a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society since 2008 and served for three years on the committee of the Society’s Developing Areas Research Group.
