New project aims to throw fresh insight into macroeconomic consequences of UK immigration

Dr Harvey Stafford has been awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to conduct new research into the macroeconomic consequences of immigration in the United Kingdom.

Department of Politics, Elmfield building

The project will examine how changes to immigration policy, from the EU's eastward enlargement in 2004 through to Brexit, have shaped the labour market, and its implications for workers, wages, and economic output more broadly.

A distinctive feature of the research is its attention to how the effects of immigration ripple through the economy. Immigrants tend to concentrate in particular sectors and occupations, and this project will investigate how changes in those areas can produce knock-on effects across other parts of the economy.

The fellowship will be hosted in the University of Sheffield's School of Economics, under the mentorship of Professor Christoph Thoenissen.
