Acclaimed Dutch author and essayist Maurits de Bruijn is the 2026 Guest Author and will visit Sheffield in late November. De Bruijn will be working with literary translator Jonathan Reeder, on a collaborative translation project with students from the University of Sheffield and University College London (UCL). The project offers students a unique opportunity to translate de Bruijn's work into English with direct input of both author and translator.

About the Author
Maurits de Bruijn is an Amsterdam-based novelist, essayist, and editor known for his exploration of identity, family dynamics, and queer culture. He gained widespread acclaim with his debut autobiographical novel Broer (Brother, 2012), which traces the aftermath of his elder brother’s sudden disappearance. His non-fiction debut Ook mijn Holocaust (Also My Holocaust, 2020) explores intergenerational trauma and Jewish identity. His latest novel Man maakt stuk (Man Smashes) is an examination of masculinity, art, and boundary-pushing in modern society. The translation project will tackle an abstract from this novel.
Publication
As yet, the work of De Bruijn has not reached English-language readers. The translation will be published on the-low-countries.com in early 2027.
Students of SLAS and beyond will get the opportunity to meet De Bruijn on 30 November 4pm. Venue tbc.
