Cher Farrugia, British Society of Oral and Dental Research (BSODR) Senior Colgate Prize
Cher Farrugia was awarded the British Society of Oral and Dental Research (BSODR) Senior Colgate Prize during this year's BSODR annual meeting, held as a Virtual Prize Meeting between the 10th and 11th of September. Cher presented a paper entitled "Role of P.gingivalis Gingipains and Multispecies Interactions in Endothelial Damage". The presented work was undertaken as part of her PhD on the role of periodontal pathogens in mediating cardiovascular disease supervised by Prof. Craig Murdoch and Prof. Graham Stafford. She has been nominated by the BSODR as the British divisional entrant for the IADR Hatton Awards to be judged at the IADR in Boston, USA in July 2021.
Zahra Kidy, Section of Odontology, Colyer Prize, the Royal Society of Medicine
Recent BDS graduate Zahra Kidy has also been awarded the Section of Odontology, Colyer Prize from the Royal Society of Medicine. Zahra who continued her BMedSci project studying oral cancer cell invasion supervised by Dr Simon Whawell had to present her findings to the judges online as attendance at the oral session planned for the spring was not possible this year. She was then invited to repeat this at a Leadership in Dentistry webinar. Zahra is now working in general practice and one day a week at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London as part of a pilot dental foundation scheme.
These awards are testimony to the excellence of our undergraduate and postgraduate researchers, and the high standards of supervision in the School. We are very proud of these achievements.
