This summer, students will have the opportunity to explore Mandarin Chinese with fun and accessible activities and lessons. Not only will they receive a unique crash course in Chinese language and characters, there will also be exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) lessons and activities, as well as unique recreational and knowledge discovery opportunities. These learning experiences will all be delivered within the context of the University of Sheffield, with its excellent reputation and learning resources.
The directional language for the courses and during the school will be English
Three learning strands
The program is divided into 3 main strands, which are designed to explore the varied topics of the course while grounding the lessons in fun activities and play.
Strand 1: Language exploration
This strand allows children to explore the wonders of Mandarin Chinese learning in a fun and engaging atmosphere. There will be everything from study about the fascinating evolution of Chinese characters to handwriting practice and poetry creation - this course strand will help to demystify Chinese characters and make Mandarin Chinese learning start to feel possible for the students.
Strand 2: Project-based STEM excellence
Introducing STEM to children is important for their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while also setting the foundation for a life-long interest in valuable academic pursuits. This course strand will explore practical activities related to STEM, such as growing bean sprouts and building and flying kites in Weston Park. The course strand will develop student’s understanding of STEM, culminating in a special presentation at the end of the course in the form of a knowledge tree they have built, inspired by the week’s activities.
Strand 3: Creativity through music and art
This strand helps develop creativity through various artistic activities, from self-discovery and exploration of the world and nature, to Chinese paper folding and artistic production, culminating in a special presentation at the end of the course.
