The Year of the Dragon is coming…
The Year of the Dragon is the next Chinese Lunar Year on 10th February 2024 and the traits of the Dragon are charisma, intelligence and confidence. We believe there can be no better traits to represent our unified spirit and drive for success in the year of 2024. The Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield is delighted to act as co-organisers for this event with our esteemed partners to bring Chinese culture to life in Sheffield this year.
What to expect...
Join us on 10th February 2024 for an evening of amazing musicians, acrobats, artists and performers.
As one of the largest multi-cultural events in Sheffield, this event has always been strongly supported by the city, Sheffield council, the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Consulate. Every year the gala is attended by senior representatives from across the region, the Chinese Embassy and Consulate who give speeches. This year we are extremely proud to be working with Sheffield Children’s Hospital as our nominated charity - meaning your donations will help change lives.
This event is about culture sharing, bringing communities together; about bringing people together; and at the same time, we’re able to raise money for a good cause.

Here's a little taster...
Chengdu Performance Troupe
We're delighted this year to introduce the compelling talent of a troupe of performers from Chengdu who will engage in thrilling acrobatics and enigmatic 'Face Changing' or Bianlian, an art form of changing masks.
Wan Lin Dance Academy Performances
Founded in 2012 and renowned for their beautiful costumes and choreography, the Wanlin Academy dancers will be gracing Sheffield this Chinese New Year for the annual gala with a spectacular traditional dance performance. The Academy runs courses in Sheffield, teaching the graceful art of Chinese classical and folk dance, and offers lessons at all levels for adults and children, as well as providing workshops and stage performances upon request.
Chen Yining - Sword Dance
In 2018, Chen Yining was invited by the world-renowned music artist Tan Dun to perform a solo dance in his composition ‘Buddha Passion’, which toured the world. In 2019, she played the leading role in the documentary: The Great Poet Du Fu, jointly recorded by the BBC UK and CCTV China. In August 2022 her performance piece ‘Crying of Four Seasons' was performed at the Edinburgh Festival.
Musical Performances and Song
This year's Gala will be a feast of traditional song and musical performances exploring Chinese instruments and opera. From solo performances to musical groups, the audience will be truly immersed in the magic and essence of Chinese culture.
