The challenge of combining the anatomy of the human body with engineering and modern technology is something that has always fascinated me, which is why I have chosen to study bioengineering. The University of Sheffield has one of the best bioengineering programmes in the UK, and its reputation really made it stand out. Not only that, but I particularly liked the structure of the course as it covered a wide range of modules from various departments, and it allowed flexibility in choosing your preferred stream and subjects.
Bioengineering is about applying engineering principles to develop devices and methods that aid human beings in restoring lost functions or body parts. The course offers a combination of theoretical learning and practical labs such as microscopy, signal processing, electrocardiography and circuitry. There are group projects which allow you to work on real problems and bond with your peers. There is also plenty of opportunity to be creative and apply independent study to areas of personal interest for assignments and essays.

MEng Bioengineering with a Year in Industry
The diversity of the modules and the different challenges that they come with are very intellectually stimulating, and whilst the combination of disciplines makes the degree interesting, the staff are always helpful and encourage students to pursue their particular interests. There are also many opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills learnt throughout the degree, through group projects and summer schemes such as iGEM or SURE, or opting to work a year in industry in the penultimate year of studies.
As an international student, I wasn’t sure what to expect when moving to Sheffield, but I immediately felt myself adapting and now consider it home. I am currently in my third year and I have not once regretted my decision to study here. I have made close friends with people from all over the world and been involved in societies such as tennis and Film Unit. The city and the university have plenty of activities and opportunities to try new things, it’s also really nice to be able to get out of the city to the Peak District for walks.
As a graduate of the University of Sheffield, I believe I will be in the best position to gain employment in the field of bioengineering. Opportunities I have had both as part of my course and through wider university engagement will put me in a good position to compete for jobs at the top of the industry.
