I am the Dyson Chair and Professor in Ceramics. I joined the School in 1994. Prior to joining the School I was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Essex and at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland. I obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1989. I am a named investigator on 65 grants (>£50m) and has graduated over 40 Ph.D. and 40 M.Sc. students. I am a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, IOM3, American and European Ceramic Societies and a member of the Word Academy of Science.
I am the highest cited UK based ceramist (11th worldwide) on Googlescholar with >400 publications, 27,000 citations and an h-index of 88. I have given >80 invited, keynote and plenary talks at international conferences.
I was the recipient of the Edward C Henry Award in 2001, the best Knowledge Transfer Partnership building on EPSRC funded research in 2009, the Verulam Medal for Ceramics (IOM3) in 2017 and the Robert Newnham award in 2021 for structure property relations in electroceramics.
