For the past 100 years the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasier have provided joint awards to material scientists who want to pursue projects, training, and experiences that broaden their horizons and deepen their craft.

The event this year was hosted by Professor Keith Jackson, Master Cutler of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, and Dr Geoffrey Andrews, Master of The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers.

PhD student Lukasz Ceglarski represented the University of Sheffield alongside other winners from Sheffield Hallam University.

Lukasz said “I had a fantastic time at the event and am really appreciative of the support of my supervisors, Ian Reaney, Ipsita Roy, and Gwen Reilly. I’d also like to thank Eleni Routoula, our School employability lead, who supported me with my application. The award I have received will allow me to take part in an AI and Data Science course that will help improve existing bioprocesses through a hybrid modelling approach. The course is at ETH Zurich which is a fantastic opportunity.”

Eleni, who supported Lukasz with his application and also attended the event, said:  “It was great to see one of our PGR students not only engaging the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers, but also getting a travel award! Lukasz is a brilliant individual who I am sure will do great things in the future! The fact that he is looking to understand more about how AI can help him accelerate his work and associated impact shows his forward thinking, as well as his entrepreneurial mindset.”
