Congratulations to PhD student, Yash, who was awarded 2nd place in the IChemE PTSIG Early Career Researcher of the Year Award

Yash was shortlisted for the IChemE PTSIG (Particle Technology Special Interest Group) Early Career Researcher of the Year Award and was awarded second place for his presentation ‘Enhancing Sustainability in Food Granulation’.

PhD student receives an award

This year a group of PhD students (working with Professor Salman) all attended the  International Conference on Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids (CHoPS) conference. All of the students gave presentations at the conference. Also in attendance was Professor Rachel Smith who was one of the invited speakers and gave her plenary talk on “Predicting the performance of particulate products: linking process and performance models”.

Yash was shortlisted for the IChemE PTSIG (Particle Technology Special Interest Group) Early Career Researcher of the Year Award and was awarded second place for his presentation ‘Enhancing Sustainability in Food Granulation’.

Yash’s research centres on two key areas. The first is advancing sustainable food granulation processes, where he assesses current granulation technologies from a sustainability perspective and works on innovations to enhance their energy efficiency. The second focus is on reducing material waste in the food industry. To achieve this, he is developing a regime map to minimise unwanted agglomeration during granulation and engineering a new granule microstructure that is more resistant to caking during storage.

Yash said “Attending conferences is one of my favourite parts of pursuing a PhD. They offer a unique chance to explore cutting-edge developments in your field while also providing the opportunity to travel to new and exciting places—some personal highlights for me have been Nuremberg for PARTEC and Prague for CHISA. It’s also a great way to bond with your research group and meet new people, including industry contacts. Over time, you often see familiar faces at these events, and conferences start to feel like reunions with friends from all over the world. Last week, I attended CHoPS 2024 in Edinburgh, where I was honoured to be nominated for the IChemE Young Researcher of the Year Award. Knowing some of the past winners and their impressive accomplishments, the pressure was definitely on! I’m thrilled to have received 2nd place, and I want to extend my gratitude to my supervisors and research group for their support leading up to the conference. Congratulations to the other two winners, fellow PhD students I first met at a conference two years ago, who have since become great conference friends!”

About CHoPS 2024

This International Conference on Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids (CHoPS) was the 11th in the series of CHoPS conferences. CHoPS 2024 built upon the successes of the previous conferences in bringing together academic and industrial colleagues working in the multidisciplinary field of handling and processing of particulate solids. The conference provides an excellent forum to exchange ideas, share knowledge and latest discoveries.
