Meet our students and alumni

We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying in the School of Biosciences, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.

Lauren Kettle student profile

The SURE scheme was advertised to my year group during my lectures and it provided me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge

Lauren Kettle Summer placement: investigating physical changes in the brain when memories form

Completing a Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) placement this summer allowed Lauren to expand her knowledge around neuroscience that had fascinated her during her biomedical science studies so far.

Fatima-Rose Lugtu - student profile

I undertook my SURE placement during the summer between my third and fourth year of my Biomedical Science degree

Fatima-Rose Lugtu Summer placement: investigating the role of long-noncoding RNAs

The research that Fatima-Rose conducted during her Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) project helped to bring attention to exciting RNA molecules worthy of further study in field of transcriptomics.

Nurkaiyisah Zaal Anuar - student story

I was able to explore a topic I was genuinely interested in and learn new skills, such as data quantification using software

Nurkaiyisah Zaal Anuar Summer placement: conducting research into cancers cells and normal cells

Inspired by her first year module “Research in Biomedicine”, Nurkaiyisah spent this summer completing a Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) placement working on a project focussing on a topic that interests her, the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) internalisation in cancers cells and normal cells.

Eira Watts Moore student profile

From Biomedical Science to Science Communication

Eira Watts Moore Now: Science Communicator, Science Museum, London

During her third year project, Eira was able to get involved in collecting data that contributed to a recently published academic paper. Eira is now a Science Communicator at London’s Science Museum and uses the skills and knowledge she gained in the lab and through getting involved in public engagement activities in Sheffield every day.

Mélina Li How Cheong student profile

What I'm doing now: from Biomedical Science to Medicine

Mélina Li How Cheong Now studying Medicine at the University of Buckingham

Biomedical Science graduate Mélina is now studying Medicine at the University of Buckingham and believes that her undergraduate studies at Sheffield, particularly human anatomy, have given her a significant advantage in preparing her for medical education.

Student profile Joe Flannagan

What I'm doing now: my role with NHS Blood and Transplant

Joe Flannagan Now: Epidemiology Scientist, NHS Blood and Transplant

Since graduating from Biomedical Science, Joe has made use of his knowledge and skills in health science and the scientific process to progress in his career. Joe is now working as an Epidemiology Scientist and thanks his degree for helping him to get to where he is now.

Alison Lee BMS

What I'm doing now: from Biomedical Science to Medicine

Alison Lee Now studying Medicine at the University of Sheffield

Alison is confident that her Biomedical Science degree has helped with the quality of her work now she's begun studying medicine at Sheffield.

Mohamed ElGhazaly BMS

My experience and my tutors’ support are what prepared me and encouraged me to apply to a PhD in Sheffield

Mohamed ElGhazaly PhD student at the University of Sheffield

Mohamed discovered his love for research during his undergraduate degree here at Sheffield. He's now a PhD student in our department, with the aim of understanding the disease mechanisms used by Salmonella Typhi to cause global epidemics of typhoid fever.

Tom Burgess year abroad - New Zealand

My year abroad in New Zealand

Thomas Burgess Year Abroad: University of Auckland, New Zealand

Tom chose to spend his year abroad studying biomedical science in New Zealand. Tom feels that this experience has not only made him more independent and more confident about eventually leaving university, but it’s also helped him to better understand what he’d like to do as a career after graduation.

Grace Mccaffery BMS

Scooping a prize for outstanding academic performance

Grace Mccaffery Won the 2019 Ede and Ravenscroft prize

First year student Grace has already made the most of the opportunities available to her at Sheffield, exploring the areas that really interest her within biomedical science, attending Peer Assisted Study Scheme sessions in the department, and even scooping the Ede and Ravenscroft prize this academic year in recognition of her outstanding academic performance.
