Getting your hands dirty is the best way to learn

What attracted you to complete a placement with Sussex Prairie Garden?

The design of the garden, and knowing that the staff and volunteers were very friendly!

How did you organise your placement?

I emailed the owners of the garden with a CV and cover letter.

The placement itself wasn't paid, but accommodation was provided at the gardens, and money for food each week.

What did a typical day consist of?

Usually working in the garden in the morning, weeding and tending to plants. At 10.30am every morning there was tea and cake! In the afternoon I would be assisting in the plant sales area, the cafe or at the front gate.

How do you think your placement has helped you develop as a landscape architecture student?

My plant knowledge has improved vastly. I feel much more equipped to design with plants now that I understand them more. Getting your hands dirty is the best way to learn.

Did you have any worries about the experience and what do you wish that you had known beforehand?

I was a bit nervous when I arrived, but Paul and Pauline made me feel very comfortable there. Don't worry about how much you already know as it is a fantastic learning experience!
