Profile

Trained as an architect in Turkey [B. Arch & M. Arch], I have been working on her PhD study in SSoA since 2017. My research interests have been driven by a passion for developing a critical approach to the production of urban space in the interconnection between social, economic and political mechanisms. My approach on both my master's degree in Ankara and the ongoing PhD studies in Sheffield intend to value the voices of 'marginalized' groups and individuals, as well as their practices in the re-production of public space.

Apart from my research, I have been engaging in teaching & other activities in SSoA.

Research interests

Project title:
Spatial-Tactical Practices in Public Spaces: Informal Night Market in Ankara

Project outline:

My research aims to reveal how city inhabitants appropriate and re-produce public spaces by transgressing into the intended agenda of authorities through ‘spatio-tactical practices’ [STPs]. STPs is a new concept that I coined through my PhD research to describe forms of re-production of public spaces by those who are disregarded from the decision-making process on the built environments. My research investigates an informal night market in Ankara by focusing on the agencies in the production of the ‘public space’, and examines diverse values brought by these practices. My research methodology uses ethnographic and auto-ethnographic research methods in the light of feminist approaches. With my research practice, I intend to have an effect on the local context and contextualize my research in the intersection of different discussions, as well as, making STPs recognizable and valuable.
