Profile

I am an academic and qualified architect with a particular interest in creating synergies between architectural pedagogy and practice. Sustainable, low carbon design is central to my teaching agenda with a specific focus on performance led design. Technology enhanced learning has been my major pedagogical focus for over a decade and I have presented widely in this field nationally over this time period. My RIBA publication Designing for the Climate Emergency (2022) has had a significant impact as one of the best ever selling RIBA educational publications, with adoption by many Schools of Architecture internationally. I am currently working on a new publication, The Detail Book, which aims to demystify architectural detailing for students of architecture.

I am a member of the QAA advisory panel for the new Architecture subject benchmark statement. The new statement will be published late in 2026 and will steer the direction of architectural education in the UK into the next decade.

As Director of Education in the School of Architecture I oversee education delivery and also overall governance of the School as a member of the School Executive. I sit on Faculty Education Committee and act as the interface between Faculty and the School in terms of education.

I chair the University level Digital Education Advisory Group (DEAG), advising the University on strategic digital education matters. I sit on the following University Committees, advising the University on strategic decisions and initiatives.

-Education Product Board

-Estates Strategy Group

-Education Space Strategy Group

As a professional architect I have over 20 years experience in professional practice working for several award winning practices and contributing to significant architectural projects. I was one of the early BIM adopters in practice, working for BDP architects, to implement multi-discipline BIM project delivery.

Research interests

As part of the Pedagogy, Practice and Scholarship Group, my research is in the form of pedagogical and scholarship activity focused on digital education and student-centred pedagogies. My outputs can be viewed at:

Teaching interests

-Student centred architectural publications - developing textbooks that are designed for students to augment their University study. My particular interest is in low carbon and climate emergency architectural design and technology.

-Digital education. The evolving landscape of digitally enhanced education approaches. The emerging integration of generative A.I. in education. Digital equity issues in higher education.

-Digital and analogue approaches in architectural design and technology teaching. From AI to hand drawing. How do students navigate a learning path in this fast moving area?

Teaching activities

-MArch architectural environment and technology: Working closely with post graduate students to develop the integration of environment and technology issues into their studio design projects. Delivering case study lectures exploring technology themes using slides, live hand drawing and live digital simulation.

-UG and PGT dissertation supervisor: Advising students on topics in the area of digital design, climate emergency design and architectural education.

-Generative A.I. in architectural education. Lectures and workshops exploring the potentials of generative A.I. in combination with digital simulation and analogue design methods.
