Bonny explains what she enjoyed most about our online Vision and Strabismus course, and the advice she’d give to other professionals looking to develop their practice.

What made you want to study the MMedSci Vision and Strabismus at Sheffield?

“By enrolling in this program, I aimed to broaden my knowledge so I could provide more advanced and specialised care to my patients. This masters course also opened new opportunities for professional growth. For example, there were modules on stroke rehabilitation, which was a new topic to me.

“This distance learning course allowed me to achieve higher-level academic studies while maintaining a full-time job.”

What have you enjoyed most about the course?

“One of the most enjoyable aspects of the course has been the opportunity to meet orthoptists from different countries. Interacting with professionals from diverse backgrounds and exchanging experiences and knowledge has been invaluable. Building connections with fellow orthoptists from around the world has not only enriched my understanding of the field but also broadened my professional network.

“Another aspect that I have greatly appreciated is the strong support provided by the lecturers. They are readily available to offer their expertise and guidance. This level of support has significantly enhanced my learning experience and allowed me to maximise the benefits of the course.”

Has it helped you in any aspects of your job as an Orthoptist?

“This course has been instrumental in enhancing several aspects of my job as an orthoptist, benefiting both my professional growth and the quality of care I provide to patients.

“One significant way the course has impacted my career is by providing me with updated knowledge. I have had the opportunity to learn the latest advancements in the field, ensuring that my practice remains current and aligned with evidence-based guidelines. This has directly translated into improved patient care, allowing me to offer the most appropriate treatments available. 

“For example, the course covered stroke management, which is a new and relevant topic for orthoptists in Hong Kong. This knowledge has not only expanded my skill set but also has the potential to increase the working field for orthoptists in my region. With this expertise, I am better equipped to assess, manage and provide comprehensive care to patients with vision-related complications resulting from stroke.

“The course has also allowed me to revisit and deepen my understanding of fundamental concepts, theories, and principles in the field of orthoptics. I have also gained proficiency in research methodologies, data analysis, and critical evaluation of scientific literature. These skills have allowed me to conduct evidence-based practice and contribute to research projects.


Completing a master course in Vision and Strabismus has positively impacted my career by boosting my professional profile and confidence. Holding this advanced qualification has enhanced my credibility as an orthoptist.

“Studying by distance learning has been an excellent experience for me as a working orthoptist, providing the opportunity for me to advance academically without compromising my professional commitments.

This mode of learning empowered me to continue growing in my career while expanding my knowledge and skills in the field of orthoptics.”

“For anyone considering taking the MMedSci Vision and Strabismus course, I have several tips based on my own experience:

This structure ensures that the course remains manageable alongside your professional commitments. Pace yourself, allocate time for studying and assignments, and create a schedule that works for you.
