Profile

Kate joined the Department of Sociological Studies in 2023, having previously worked as a Blood cancer Research Sister in Sheffield since 2014. She completed a BSc in Biology at the University of Sussex in 2009, followed by her adult nurse training and MSc in Nursing at Sheffield Hallam University in 2012 and 2015 respectively. In 2022 Kate received a distinction for her MA in Social Research from the University of Sheffield. Kate’s research interests include patient experiences, haematology, and LGBTQ+ experiences.

Research interests

Kate’s PhD research project is entitled “Watch and Worry? How are the support needs of people living with newly diagnosed chronic haematological malignancies being addressed?” and aims to explore the impact of an untreated chronic cancer diagnosis on patients, their expectations, and support needs in the first year following diagnosis.

Kate’s PhD supervisors are Dr Kate Weiner from the Department of Sociological Studies and Dr Abigail Tazzyman from the Sheffield Methods Institute.

Grants

Kate’s PhD is funded by a 3 year White Rose DTP studentship.

Teaching interests

Kate is working as a GTA on the SMI304 Doing Mixed Methods Research undergraduate module for semester 1 2023/24. Kate also demonstrates for Data Carpentry for Social Scientists and Librarian courses externally.

Professional activities and memberships

Kate sits on the University of Sheffield LGBTQ+ Staff Committee.
