Why did you choose the MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling course at the University of Sheffield?

Choosing the HEDM MSc felt like the right decision due to Sheffield’s esteemed reputation in the health economic field, its affiliation with NICE, and the technical, real-life application-centered curriculum.

Can you describe one of the most memorable or impactful experiences during your studies in the course?

One significant experience for me related to a health economic modelling module. Students were assessed based on an assignment and a presentation of that assignment to the lecturer, who was a NICE committee member. This assignment definitely took me out of my comfort zone and it gave me a glimpse to my future career since part of a health economist’s role is to defend our work in front of a health technology assessment committee.

How did the course prepare you for the real-world challenges in health economics and decision modelling?

The course felt like it was designed to prepare us for our careers as health economists. Most of the modules taught me skills that I use at least once a week in my current role. The assessment methods also closely mirror how I am evaluated in real-life situations. There were very few exams but a lot of assignments and presentations. From my experience the job of a health economist is mainly assignment based and presenting is a big part of showcasing my work whereas very few times I was rewarded by knowing things “off the top of my head”.

How did you find the overall student experience at the University of Sheffield?

Elevating the student experience is definitely one of the UoS’s strongest suits. As someone who wanted to experience more than what my course offered I certainly felt that the UoS was the right choice for me. During the orientation and fresher’s weeks I learned most things I needed to know about the university and I made friends that I am in touch with to this day. The wide array of activities, societies and sports teams provided me with opportunities to explore new experiences. On top of that the student union felt like a living, breathing organism. There was always something happening and it catered to every student’s needs. From cheap meals to pop up events and information centres, the SU truly felt like more than just a building.

What advice would you give to students who are considering enrolling in the MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling course at the University of Sheffield?

My advice would be to apply to the HEDM course, especially if you are seeking practical, real-life applications in your learning. Particularly for those considering a career as modellers, I believe there is no other course that places such strong emphasis on this field.
