As well as graduating from Sheffield with a medical degree, Sarah intercalated her studies, spending a year broadening her understanding of neurological disorders with a masters in Clinical Neurology.

"I completed my masters in Clinical Neurology at the Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) in 2016 as an intercalated degree within my MBChB programme. I can wholeheartedly say that it was an excellent choice, which gave me an enormously rewarding year which broadened and deepened my understanding of neurological disease processes and gave me a clear structure with which to approach their diagnosis.

"The taught modules were engaging with a high quality of teaching – covering thought-provoking ground which went above and beyond that contained in the neurology modules in my medical degree.

The highlight of the course for me however was the third term, which comprised of a 15-week research project that I completed in clinical stroke research. Enthusiastic and supportive supervision by an expert in stroke medicine empowered me to present my work at an international conference, which was a brilliant experience!

Clinical Neurology MSc

"I was drawn to this course as at the time I was leaning towards neurology as a career pathway. Even though this has now changed, and I am pursuing a career in respiratory medicine, the strong grounding in neurology that this course has given me has proved invaluable. I find that in my day-to-day practice, neurological presentations are familiar territory (which is notoriously not the case in most IMT doctors!), and I have also found that this has equipped me well in my postgraduate MRCP exams.

"Probably the most helpful thing, however, has been the excellent research experience that I gained from this course. It stimulated a keen interest for clinical research and the solid grounding in research methodology has equipped me with the skills needed to go on to be principal investigator in a large multi-centre study. This is something which I would not have had the confidence to take on had it not been for this early exposure to the world of research within a clinician’s career."
