Profile

I joined ScHARR in April 2009 after gaining a BSc in Chemistry with Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool, followed by an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Development and then a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Loughborough University.

My work at ScHARR mainly involves undertaking systematic literature reviews (including meta-analysis) on various topics for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment Programme, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the UK Department of Health (DoH), the pharmaceutical industry and other research funding bodies.

  • Application and development of methods for systematic reviewing and evidence synthesis

Recent and current projects

  • What matters to children, parents or caregivers in dietary management of child and adolescent obesity: Synthesis of qualitative systematic reviews 
  • Framework development for action on health inequities in primary care
  • Analysis of costs associated with different safety profiles of trazodone and other products used to treat depressive disorders
  • Frequency of blood tests for inflammatory conditions treated with immune suppressing and biologic drugs
  • Major Trauma Triage Study (MATTS)
  • The Design, Development, Commissioning and Evaluation of Patient Focused Vascular Services
  • A programme to develop and evaluate a complex intervention to achieve a high calorie diet for people with ALS (HighCALS)

Teaching interests
  • I teach post graduate Masters students and supervise PhD students in a range of subjects including systematic reviews and critical appraisal techniques, meta-analysis, health research methods, and processes for health technology assessment.
  • I am a module lead for Study Design and Systematic Review Methods module (HAR6169) on MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling.  
  • I Co-lead ScHARR's bespoke training course on systematic reviewing.
  • I am interested in supervising research students in areas such as systematic review methodology and reviews of complex interventions
