Profile

For enquiries please contact - SMPH-West-Operational@sheffield.ac.uk

I joined the University in 1997 as a PhD student. During the course of my PhD, I discovered a number of novel anti-angiogenic agents which were patented by the University of Sheffield and led to me being given the AACR – Novartis Scholar In Training Award (2000) and the BACR Translational Research Award (2005) - both in open competition.

In 2004 I was appointed to a lectureship and was awarded the Certificate in Learning and Teaching in 2009. In 2013 I designed and established the MSc(Res) in Translational Oncology and in 2016 I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Senior Lecturer. I was the departmental director of learning and teaching for the Department of Oncology & Metabolism from 2018-2021.

I am currently the Director of Intercalated Studies, the Deputy Director of the Personal Academic Tutoring scheme, the medical school Disability Liaison officer for PGT, and the History of Medicine Lead. I am also a member of the University Discipline Committee.

Research interests

My current research interests are student perceptions and decision-making processes around intercalation.

Collaborative research with colleagues in Sheffield also includes investigations into incidentaloma in modern medicine, the challenges and potential solutions.

I am passionate about student support and welfare and am the Disability Liaison Officer for the Medical School PGT students and the deputy academic director of the Personal Academic Tutor scheme (MBChB) and an associate director of student affairs. I am a personal academic tutor and/or mentor for undergraduate medical students, PGT and PGR students in the Medical school and was nominated for Best Academic Mentor in the Annual Academic Awards 2018.

Teaching activities

I am the Director of Intercalation studies and am the course lead of the BSc Medical Sciences Research and the BSc Medical Sciences (Surgery).  I am also the History of Medicine SSC lead, the deputy ILA lead (phase 1 and 2), and involved in physiology teaching for first-year MBChB students as well as assessment setting and quality assurance.

I lead the Tumour Microenvironment and Literature Review modules on the MSc(Res) in Translational Oncology course and teach on the MSc in  Molecular Medicine course.
