Take part in Smart-Health

Whether you’re living with multiple conditions or in good health, everyone is invited to take part in Smart-Health and make a meaningful contribution to health research that will benefit future generations.

Tim, our Director, talks through what is involved in participating in Smart-Health.

We are creating a research database using data from smartphones and wearable devices to understand how they can help us predict, prevent, diagnose, and monitor diseases.

We're looking for 10,000 volunteers from across South Yorkshire to join us.

Who can join?

Almost any adult who uses a smartphone and email can participate. You don't need a wearable device (like a smartwatch) to join. We may loan you a wearable device if you don't have one.

We're looking for people of all backgrounds and health conditions (or if you're in good health) to join us.

How do I join Smart-Health?

There are five simple steps to get started, which can take up to 30 minutes.

  1. Read the Participant Information Sheet and consent to take part
  2. Share some details about you and authenticate your email address
  3. You'll be sent an email with a unique link to download our Smart-Health app, developed by our trusted partner DAISER
  4. Download the Smart-Health app using your unique link.
The app will ask for consent to share data like steps, sleep and heart rate. You can choose whether or not to share GPS (location) data
  5. Complete a lifestyle and health questionnaire in the Smart-Health app

Once you're registered, you'll complete a shorter follow-up questionnaire every three months in the Smart-Health app to keep up to date.

Why join Smart-Health?

Help shape the future of health research. By joining Smart-Health, you’ll be helping researchers discover how everyday technology can improve healthcare for everyone. Although you won’t receive personal health feedback, your contribution could lead to breakthroughs that benefit future generations.

You’ll stay informed with updates and summaries of research findings, and may be invited to take part in future studies or events. There are no health risks involved, and you are free to withdraw at any time.

Your privacy matters

Your personal information is treated with the highest level of care. Identifiable details like your name, date of birth, and address are stored securely and kept separate from your research data.

Before any data is used for research, it is fully de-identified, meaning researchers will never see anything that could reveal who you are. All data is stored in secure UK-based systems, and only approved researchers can access it under strict conditions.

If you choose to share GPS data, it will only be used to calculate travel distance or air pollution exposure — never your exact location.
