What is Smart-Health?
Smart-Health is a research study led by the University of Sheffield. We’re exploring how data from smartphones and wearables (like Fitbits or Apple Watches) can help predict, prevent, and monitor diseases.
Our research
In the UK, more than 90% of people use a smartphone, and around 40% wear a device like a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or Garmin smartwatch. These gadgets don’t just track steps, they hold powerful clues about our health, habits, and lifestyle. But even though so many of us use them every day, researchers rarely get access to this kind of data. That means we’re missing out on opportunities to make new discoveries that could improve health for everyone.
Smart-Health will connect three types of data that together will allow researchers to make new discoveries.
- Smartphone and wearable data
- NHS health records
- Questionnaire data
