I gained valuable experience in quantitative research and data analysis

During the summer of 2017, I participated in the SURE scheme. SURE is a programme that gives students an opportunity to participate in current research being conducted at the university.

My project was a part of wider research led by a PhD student. We looked into a variety of techniques that may be successfully utilised to reduce the negative stereotyping of people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASCs).

My supervisors were ready to answer any questions about the topic as it was their area of expertise, which greatly improved my understanding of the processes involved in stereotyping, as well as the wider aspects of social psychology

SURE allowed me to explore such a specific area in much greater depth than I usually would in usual lectures. Additionally, my supervisors were ready to answer any questions about the topic as it was their area of expertise, which greatly improved my understanding of the processes involved in stereotyping, as well as the wider aspects of social psychology.

Through this project, I gained valuable experience in quantitative research and data analysis, which was crucial for the confidence with which I approached the 3rd year research project. Furthermore, it helped me conclude that I would like to pursue a career in research. Next year I am hoping to start a Masters degree here at Sheffield.

The SURE scheme would be a great opportunity for any student as it would allow them to develop and improve the skills necessary for further education. As it is a university-wide scheme, they would also have an opportunity to meet with students from other departments and learn about their projects during optional training sessions, which I found fascinating.
