University of Sheffield named University of the Year runner-up in the North and North East in The Times Good University Guide 2027

The University of Sheffield has been named University of the Year runner-up in the North and North East, in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027.

The University of Sheffield has been named University of the Year runner-up in the North and North East, in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027.

The annual guide ranks Sheffield 11th nationally, maintaining its position among the UK’s leading universities. The result builds on a strong run of national and international results, reflecting the breadth of the University’s academic performance, world-leading research and outstanding student experience.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027 provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain. It features everything prospective students need to know about applying to university, in addition to detailed online profiles for UK universities, covering research reputation to campus facilities, scholarships and bursaries, and nightlife.

The list is based on an analysis of student satisfaction with teaching quality and their student experience, entry standards, research quality, sustainability and graduate prospects.

The news follows a run of success for the University of Sheffield. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, Sheffield rose to 82nd in the world and 14th in the UK, placing it firmly in the global top 100. The University was also named the top university in Northern England in the Daily Mail University Guide.

In the latest National Student Survey (NSS), Sheffield was rated number one in the Russell Group for Student Voice, while Sheffield’s Students’ Union was ranked the best in the Russell Group. The University was also ranked first in the Russell Group for teaching across a range of subject areas.

This builds on Sheffield's research excellence, where 92 per cent of the University’s research and impact was assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF).
