Law in Context: Rapid Response Event & Podcast Series
Introducing the podcast delving in to the legal side of the latest news, co-hosted by Dr. Anna Ventouratou and Dr. Sotirios Lekkas with the School of Law, University of Sheffield.
What’s Law Got to Do With It? Quite a bit, as it turns out! Law in Context is a rapid-response event and podcast series that dives into the legal side of the latest news. Co-hosted by Dr. Anna Ventouratou and Dr. Sotirios Lekkas, this series unpacks the legal issues behind the headlines and explores the bigger picture of how the law operates in today’s world.
Each episode is recorded live and released as a podcast, making it easy for anyone interested in the law—from students and news junkies to community members who just want to know more—to tune in. Can’t make it to the live event? No worries! You can listen later, on your own time, on your favourite podcast platform. So, whether you’re curious about how the law regulates (or sometimes doesn’t regulate!) the stories you see in the news, this series is for you.
Why Listen?
Legal issues often sit right at the heart of current events, but they’re rarely easy to understand without a law degree. That’s where we come in! Law in Context aims to ‘democratise’ access to legal knowledge—helping listeners cut through the jargon and empowering them to join the public conversation. In a world where myths and misinformation about the law spread quickly, our podcast is here to set the record straight with insights from credible experts.
Interdisciplinary Conversations
We believe in bringing diverse perspectives to the table, so in every episode, a guest from another department joins the lawyers to share fresh insights. From political science to sociology and beyond, these experts help us dig deeper, adding context that goes beyond the law to give you a well-rounded view of each topic.
Who’s Invited?
Everyone! Law in Context is for anyone who wants to learn more about current affairs and the role of law in society—law students, political enthusiasts, news followers, and community members who want to engage with experts and explore the research happening at the University of Sheffield. Best of all, it’s free to attend! All you need to do is register and join us.
How It Works
Our sessions blend expert insights with lively discussion. Each event starts with a 45-50 minute panel discussion (recorded live as a podcast) with our hosts and guests, expertly captured by our sound wizard, Kitty Turner. Afterward, it’s time for your questions! We open up the floor for an audience Q&A (not recorded), where you can dive deeper and get into real conversations with our experts. Or, catch the podcast on your own time, whenever and wherever suits you.
