We have an exciting opportunity to join the School of Law as a Research Associate to join a project entitled “Encouraging detainee dignity: A pilot and evaluation of a digital information guide to police custody for adult detainees in two police force areas”.

The project will result in an accessible digital information guide for adult detainees in police custody, which will be implemented in two police force areas in England and Wales. This digital information guide contains critical information about detainees’ rights and entitlements, and the treatment they should expect from staff, helping them to better understand these rights and supporting autonomous decision making. This digital information guide will be evaluated in terms of its effects on detainees and staff, to establish a proof of concept. This project draws on prior ESRC-funded research (see the ‘good’ police study project page).

You will be working with Professor Layla Skinns (Principal Investigator, PI), as well as being part of the vibrant research environment at the University of Sheffield. The primary tasks of the research associate is to assist the PI with: the implementation of the digital information guide in two adjoining police forces; the evaluation of this digital information guide, involving the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative methods (interviews, observation and brief surveys); and the writing up of these data into a report to be published as a Centre for Criminological Research Occasional Paper, as well as contributing to other research outputs. Throughout the post, you will be supported in the development of your research skills and independence for the success of your future career.
