Enrolment and fee options

Undergraduate students (eg BA, BSc, BEng)

Undergraduate students have three enrolment options:

Option 1: As a not-for-credit, Languages for All fee-waiver student (subject to eligibility)

Your main degree programme cannot include any unrestricted credits (please check with your home department)

The language module will not

  • be included in the 120 credits that form your degree.
  • count towards your overall end-of-year result.
  • affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

There is no fee, but minimum attendance and coursework criteria apply.

University of Sheffield students who receive a fee waiver under the Languages for All scheme must:

  • complete all mandatory assessment (i.e. piece of formative coursework and oral assessment)
  • Attend a minimum of 70% of seminars and tutorials.

If you do not meet these criteria, you will not be eligible for the fee waiver in future semesters.

To check if you are eligible for a fee waiver, please view the Languages for All Fee Waiver Eligibility Criteria and our Eligibility Flowchart

Cancellation policy A applies to this option.

Option 2: For credits (subject to eligibility)

Your main degree programme MUST include some unrestricted credits (please ask your home department).

The language module will

  • be included in the 120 credits that form your degree.
  • count towards your overall end-of-year result.
  • affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

All our modules are worth 10 credits per semester.

Note: If your main degree programme includes just 10 unrestricted credits, you are allowed to enrol under option 2 in the first semester and continue with the same language under option 1 (fee waiver) in the second semester.

Cancellation policy A applies to this option.

Option 3: As a not-for-credit, Languages for All self-funded student (all students are eligible for this option)

The language module will not

  • be included in the 120 credits that form your degree.
  • count towards your overall mark for the year.
  • affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

A fee applies: Courses cost £270 for one semester and £480 for two semesters.

Cancellation policy B applies to this option.

Postgraduate taught (PGT) students (eg Masters)

PGT students have 2 enrolment options:

Option 1: For credits (subject to eligibility)

Your Masters programme must include some unrestricted credits (please ask your home department)

The language module will

  • be included in the 180 credits that form your degree.
  • count towards your overall mark for the year.
  • affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

As language modules are 10 credits each, PGT students taking language modules MUST also enrol on the 5-credit module MLT6061 Enhanced Languages Project in the Autumn semester and/or the 5-credit module MLT6062 Enhanced Languages Project in the Spring semester. Further information regarding these modules may be found in the MLTC's module description pages.

Cancellation policy A applies to this option.

Option 2: As a not-for-credit, self-funded student (all students are eligible for this option)

The language module will not

  • be included in the 180 credits that form your degree.
  • count towards your overall mark for the year.
  • affect your ability to progress to the next year of your degree/graduate.

A fee applies: Courses cost £270 for one semester and £480 for two semesters.

Cancellation policy B applies to this option.

Postgraduate research (PGR) students (eg PhD)

PGR students have 2 enrolment options:

Option 1: As part of the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP)

  • The language module will be included in your DDP portfolio.
  • The language must be relevant to your doctoral research and/or future career development.
  • Your supervisor must consent to your taking the module as part of the DDP (The MLTC will contact your supervisor directly, but you should speak to your supervisor before applying).

There is no fee, but minimum attendance and coursework criteria apply.

University of Sheffield students who receive a fee waiver under the DDP must

  • attend a minimum of 70% of seminars and tutorials
  • complete all mandatory assessment (i.e. piece of formative coursework and oral assessment).

If you do not meet these criteria, you will not be eligible for the DDP in future semesters.

Cancellation policy A applies to this option.

Option 2: As a self-funded student

  • The language module will not be included in your DDP portfolio.

A fee applies: Courses cost £270 for one semester and £480 for two semesters.

Cancellation policy B applies to this option.

Members of the public and University of Sheffield staff

Members of the general public and University of Sheffield members of staff may enrol on language modules for a fee.

A fee applies: Courses cost £270 for one semester and £480 for two semesters.

Cancellation policy B applies to this option.

Please note that the registration process is completed online. If you experience any problems in completing your registration, see the guidance notes to help you navigate through the process.

Cancellation policy

The cancellation policy depends on the enrolment option, as explained below.

Cancellations must be submitted via our cancellation form. Please note we are unable to process cancellations via email. Anyone wishing to cancel a Chinese, Japanese or Korean language module, please contact seas@sheffield.ac.uk.

Policy A - For students taking language modules for credits or with a fee waiver

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 11 October 2024
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 21 February 2025

It is not possible to drop the module after these deadlines, unless

  • extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidenced

AND

  • no more than three teaching weeks were attended

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline.

A student who wishes to cancel both semesters may cancel their place in Autumn (i.e., there is no need to complete a second cancellation request in Spring).

Policy B - For students who pay a course fee

Deadlines:

  • Semester one (Autumn): 5pm, Friday 11 October 2024
  • Semester two (Spring): 5pm, Friday 21 February 2025

Cancellations made before these deadlines will result in a refund of the course fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Please note that the cancellation fee of £50 is payable if you have not yet paid the module course fee at the point of cancellation.

Refunds will not be issued after these deadlines, unless

  • extenuating circumstances apply, which can be evidenced

AND

  • no more than three teaching weeks were attended

A student who enrols for both Autumn and Spring semesters, completes the Autumn semester, and then decides not to continue in Spring may cancel their Spring module up until the Spring deadline. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee, minus an administrative charge of £50.00.

Spring semester cancellations submitted before 5pm, Friday 24 January 2025 will result in a waiver of the £50.00 administrative fee. In these cases, the refund will be equal to the two-semester fee minus the one-semester fee

FAQs

How do I enrol onto a Languages for All course?

Take a course for credits:  You can either choose to do this via the Online Module Choice process, where you choose the modules you want to take for the next academic year or, if you decide later on that you want to take a language with us, you can do so via the Add/Drop process, which is usually open during the first three weeks of the semester.

Not-for-credit (as part of a free scheme or for a fee): If you would like to take a course in addition to the usual number of credits required for your programme, you can fill in a Registration of Interest form that you can find on the MLTC website under Apply Now.

This will enable you to choose the language you would like to take and when you would like to receive notifications from us that applications are open (either the current semester only or all semesters going forward). It should also tell you on the website when applications open for the next semester, as enrolment approaches, so keep an eye out for this as well.

I am unsure of what my level is in my preferred language - what should I do?

If you are unsure which module level you should take, the first place to check would be our main MLTC Languages page. Click on the relevant language, and explore the module pages to have a look at what the pre-requisites are for each level. It may be clear from here which level you should choose.

However, if it is not, then it will be possible to attend a consultation with the relevant language coordinator to ascertain what your level is. We'll contact you by email to organise this consultation once you have initiated your module choice (either through our application form, or through the online module choice system).

If I have the option to take a language for credit as part of my course, can I choose not to take this option and take the module as a fee-waiver student instead?

No - if you could have chosen to study an MLTC module as a credited student but do not, you can still study the module with us but it must be as a fee-paying student. You can only study on a fee-waiver basis if you have no unrestricted credits - i.e. all the modules in your degree programme are compulsory.

Please note that having 120 credits on your student record is not a guarantee that you will be entitled to the fee waiver. This just means that you have selected all your modules but if some of them are optional, you could have chosen a language instead of these which discounts you from the fee waiver.

Do I receive any discount on MLTC courses as a member of staff/alumnus of the University?

Unfortunately we do not currently offer discounts for members of staff or alumni of the university.

I've chosen the self-funding option - what happens if I can't pay my language course fee?

If you know you are unable to pay your MLTC course fee, it is very important that you let us know as soon as possible. You can do this by emailing mltc@sheffield.ac.uk or by telephoning +44 114 222 4897. We can then assess your circumstances and proceed on how we will move forward. Please note, however, that in the vast majority of circumstances you will need to pay your fee as normal, or we will need to remove you from the course.

In exceptional cases, the Student Fees team may allow you to break down your fee into two instalments (but not typically more than that). However, that needs to be agreed with them in the first instance.

I have already chosen the modules for my main programme of study but I would like to swap out one of my modules for an MLTC module. Can I do this and if so, how?

If you are eligible to take an MLTC module for credit, the best time to swap a non-MLTC module for an MLTC one would be the add/drop period. This takes place during the first two to three weeks of a given semester.

How do I register, step-by-step, to take an MLTC Course as a member of staff/member of the public?
  1. Complete the application form for the language that you would like to apply for.
  2. The department will decide which module to place you in based on the level of experience you have provided and the outcome of this will be communicated to you via email within a few days of your initial application. Please note that the university is very busy in September and so you may not receive a response straight away.
  3. In our response, you will be sent everything you should need to register successfully, including a link to apply for your student card and a Group Preference Form where you can apply to take the classes which are most convenient for you.
  4. A student record will be created for you by the university’s Admissions team. Once this has been done, you will receive an email from preregistration@sheffield.ac.uk , where you will be directed to complete your pre-registration tasks. Please note that you must complete all of these to be able to attend classes.
  5. Your tasks will include paying your course fee- you must also do this before attending classes. You can pay your fee here. Once registered, you can also request your student Ucard using this form.
  6. If there are any difficulties fitting you to classes based on the times you have chosen in the Group Preference Form, we will contact you but otherwise you should consult your iSheffield timetable where you will see your class times in full. Please note that these will not appear instantaneously after you complete your pre-registration tasks- it usually takes a couple of days for students to be allocated to classes. Please try not to attend classes if you are not fully registered/have not been allocated to a class yet. Classes in our more popular languages can become full quickly and there may not be space in the room to accept extra students.
  7. You should now be fully registered and be able to attend classes as normal.
What happens if I wish to defer my place on the course as a Languages for All student?

There is no option to defer your place on one of our Languages for All courses as such; you would need to cancel your place via our cancellation form (providing that you are doing so in advance of the cancellation deadline) and then apply again for the following semester.  In exceptional circumstances, we can defer students' places on a course but this would be at the MLTC's discretion and would only be in exceptional circumstances.

Will I be able to cancel my enrolment/registration?

You can cancel your enrolment at any time before the cancellation deadline, which will usually be at the end of week 2 of a given semester. If you cancel before this point, you will receive a full refund minus a £50 administration fee. If you attempt to cancel after this point, no refund will apply and the cancellation will not be processed.

If you pay for two semesters of courses, you can receive a full refund for the second semester (without the £50 administration fee), providing that you cancel before the deadline (this is usually mid-January).

Please note that we cannot process cancellations via email in any circumstance and you must submit a cancellation form.
