Right to work

The University has a legal responsibility to ensure that all its employees have the legal right to work in the UK before they start work. If you do not have the right to work in the UK already, any offer of employment we make to you will be conditional upon you gaining it.

Right to work

Any job application that you submit to us will be assessed using criteria based on the knowledge, skills and experience required for the role.  You will not be treated less favourably than another applicant on the grounds of nationality.   However, if you do not have the right to work in the UK already, any offer of employment/work we make to you will be conditional upon your gaining it.  By law, you will not be able to start working for the University until you are able to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK.

Do I have the right to work in the UK?

When an individual is subject to UK immigration control, they will require a visa to work in the UK.

The following individuals do not need a visa for the UK, but do still have to prove their right to work before they can start work.

  • British citizens (but not British Overseas Citizen, British National (Overseas) or British Protected Person)
  • EU/EEA/Swiss nationals holding status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Non-EEA nationals with Indefinite Leave to Remain/Settlement in the UK

What if I don't yet have the right to work in the UK?

If you don't already have the right to work in the UK, you are still welcome to apply for a job with the University.  The most common route which you can gain the right to work in the UK is through the points based system, although there are other routes depending on your personal circumstances, such as family or ancestral links you make have with the UK.

If you are unsure of your right to work in the UK we recommend using the online tool provided by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) which will help you to establish your eligibility and options relating to visas.

If you are made an offer of employment with the University and intend to seek permission to work in the UK under the Skilled Worker route you must first obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from the University.  In order to issue the CoS certain eligibility criteria must be met including that the job is skilled to at least RQF level 3 or above, and meets the minimum salary requirements for the role (usually £26,200 per year, depending on experience, the type of role or qualifications held).  You can find further information about the Skilled Worker route and eligibility requirements on our Skilled Worker web pages.

Senior academic/research roles at the University may be eligible for the Global Talent visa.  Further information is available on our Global Talent visa web pages.

How can I evidence my right to work in the UK?

The type of right work check depends on the document you will be using to evidence your right to work.

Please visit our information for candidates web pages which outline how you can evidence your right to work.
