Child development complications

We develop experimental and computational approaches to evaluate the biomechanical competence of the musculoskeletal system associated with normal development, pre-birth conditions and child development complications.

In collaboration with Sheffield Teaching Hospital, Sheffield Children's Hospital and other regional NHS centres, we use our expertise in multi-scale experimental and computational biomechanics to study many research areas including:

  • pre-term births, including the shape and texture of the placenta shape/texture and the biomechanics of the uterine cervix and pelvic floor
  • joint deformation in children, such as spine scoliosis or hip dysplasia
  • the effects of haemophilia on joints
  • bone fractures in children due to conditions such as Vitamin D deficiency, rickets, obesity, osteogenesis imperfecta, or child abuse

Centres of excellence

The University's cross-faculty research centres harness our interdisciplinary expertise to solve the world's most pressing challenges.
