Student view: University of Sheffield hosts its second Data and Design Hackathon

Two BA Journalism Studies students, Sophie Stanley and Varvara Riepina, report on the recent Data and Design Hackathon hosted by the School of Information, Journalism and Communication.

Students spent four days working with industry leaders to solve solutions to real-world problems.

The event, which took place from the 6th to the 9th of April, had students work together in groups using their skills to solve a problem which was then pitched on the last day.

During presentations on the first day John McNamara, IBM Master Inventor, gave a session on Design Thinking to inspire participants.

Dr Suvodeep Mazumdar, hackathon co-organiser said that over 100 people signed up to participate including Science, Engineering and non-STEM students from Undergraduate level to PHD.

He said: “When students move onto the industry they will often work as an interdisciplinary team with people from other disciplines.

“In this hackathon we are trying to simulate that. It’s often difficult to do that in their programs of studies,” said Dr Mazumdar.

On the last day students had only five minutes to present their solutions, which was judged by a panel of experts.

Awards were then given out to a number of groups with different categories, such as ‘most impactful solution,’ as well as prizes for first, second and third place.

Sheffield Digital and Technology Park was one of the sponsors of the event. CEO Tom Wolfenden, said: “Some of the prototypes we’ve seen after only three days are quite fantastic.

“What has changed since last year is the advent of AI. Seeing how people have used AI to build code and build platforms has transformed what the hackathon scene looks like,” he said.

The first place prize was awarded to LibrAIs, who created an AI-powered web application to make long form content easier to find and use. This therefore saves time and improves accessibility for students and researchers.

Emil Niyazov, MSc Data Science, was a part of the winning team. He said: “The most important thing was participating in the hackathon, it was a great experience.

“We are very tired but very happy and proud of ourselves.”

Every group was praised for their hard work and inventive ideas and the following awards were handed out:
