You will be supported, you will be challenged in the best ways, and you will be part of a community that truly cares.
Before coming to the UK, I was studying at Yonsei University, and joining the Global Opportunities programme at the University of Sheffield became a turning point in my academic journey.
From the very beginning, what stood out to me about Sheffield was how intentionally the university supports international students. The Global Opportunities team doesn’t just help you study abroad—they make sure you feel welcomed, supported, and prepared every step of the way. Even before I arrived, their guidance and communication gave me reassurance that I wasn’t navigating this experience alone.
That support became especially meaningful because my start in Sheffield was far from easy. I faced a number of unexpected challenges: I lost my luggage, became seriously ill with the flu, experienced train cancellations that left me overnight at Manchester Airport, and later on, even dealt with flooding in my accommodation. These moments were stressful, I’m not gonna lie, and at times overwhelming. But what truly made the difference was how the university responded. Every time something went wrong, there was a system in place—and people behind that system—ready to help. From Accommodation Services to academic staff, and especially through the Global Opportunities network, I always felt listened to and supported. Sheffield doesn’t just offer solutions; it offers care.
Academically and socially, the University of Sheffield provides an outstanding environment. The libraries are one of my favorite aspects of campus life. They are modern, comfortable, and incredibly well-resourced, making them ideal spaces for both focused study and collaboration. The Students' Union is another highlight—dynamic, inclusive, and full of opportunities to connect through societies, events, and support services. It plays a huge role in helping students feel like they truly belong here.
I also want to share a unique perspective for anyone considering a Reverse Year like mine, starting in February. One big advantage is that you get to spend the whole summer abroad, which gives you more time to travel and explore, and Sheffield is truly beautiful in summer. It also allows you to extend your experience overseas, making your time abroad feel longer and more immersive than a typical exchange year. If you’re thinking about a late start, don’t worry—you’ll still get the full experience, and sometimes even more.
What I’ve learned through my experience is that Sheffield is a university that genuinely invests in its students. It values diversity, well-being, and personal growth just as much as academic success. And through Global Opportunities, the university opens doors—not only to new countries, but to new confidence and perspectives.
So to anyone considering coming to Sheffield, whether in February or September, I can say this with confidence: you will be supported, you will be challenged in the best ways, and you will be part of a community that truly cares.
