The placement has helped me to improve my confidence
Why did you decide to do a year in industry?
I thought it would be a great way to acclimatise to the working world, and I wanted to get used to a regular working structure. Plus I wanted to save some money for travelling.
How did you find your year in industry opportunity?
A huge number of opportunities were advertised through the University’s Career Connect vacancy service.
Tell us about project(s) which you have been most involved with whilst on year in industry?
I’ve really been able to get involved in the way the business is run. In 2018, a new policy was issued which stated the requirements companies must adhere to minimise the risk of contamination. This resulted in a huge project to ensure compliance, and the new procedures I helped to write are now being put into operation.
What do you like about the company you have done your year in industry with?
The company is absolutely fantastic, an extremely friendly office environment. There are also some great charity opportunities – I’m currently signed up to help build a nursery in Malawi. That’s been one of the biggest perks.
What has been the most challenging aspect to undertake a year in industry?
I found it difficult to adjust to the regular structure. But now I’m fully acclimatised, and enjoy getting all of my work done during set hours.
I also found the scientific writing aspect of the placement difficult in the first few months. I worked closely with my manager to get up to speed, and now I feel I have improved greatly.
What has been your favourite part of completing a year in industry?
Definitely the people. I’ve met so many fantastic people which has really made me appreciate the value of a friendly working environment. It’s really helped my confidence too.
Which part of your degree has helped you with undertaking a year in industry the most?
Working strictly to deadlines, attending all timetabled sessions and asking for help when struggling with a problem.
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
I plan to apply for the graduate scheme here at DePuy Synthes and elsewhere. I’m also planning on doing some volunteer work abroad.
