Reflecting on a decade of the Diamond

On Monday 27th October, we celebrated a very special milestone — ten years since The Diamond first opened its doors.

What began as an ambitious vision for hands-on, multidisciplinary practical engineering education has grown into something far beyond what its original planners expected. The 10-year celebration gave us a chance not only to look back, but to really feel the energy, pride and creativity that continues to flow through the building every day.

The day brought together staff, students, alumni, industry partners, donors and many of the people who shaped The Diamond from the very beginning. Across talks, exhibits and lab activities, there was a genuine sense of excitement — the kind that reminds you why The Diamond is such an important part of our Faculty’s identity.

Highlights included:

  • The Story Behind the Diamond, with Professor Emeritus Mike Hounslow, Professor Stephen Beck and the original architects from Twelve Architects — a rare and inspiring insight into how the building came to be, and how it has evolved.

  • In Conversation with Sir John Lazar (President of the Royal Academy of Engineering), who reflected on engineering education, the national landscape and the importance of nurturing innovation.

  • Industry and student panels, offering honest, energetic perspectives from across our community.

  • Hands-on lab sessions, from semiconductor fabrication to aerospace simulation, which were full from start to finish.

  • Student showcases in the Moonscape, which created one of the most memorable moments of the day. Several guests — including Sir John — commented on how impressive, professional and enthusiastic our students were.

One of the most gratifying pieces of feedback we received was that what is happening inside The Diamond has exceeded the ambitions of those who designed it ten years ago. Hearing this directly from the people who envisioned the building was a proud moment for everyone involved.

We were also lucky to have our Engineering Digital Ambassador capture the atmosphere throughout the day. You can watch the highlights video here.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed, helped, volunteered, or simply came along to support the day. A huge amount of work went into planning and delivering the event, and it was truly a team effort across MEE, the Faculty and beyond. The pride and warmth in the building on the day made it all worthwhile.

Here’s to the next decade of The Diamond — and to all the people who make it more than just a building.
